View from the Chair – July 2019

In late June we had our fourth induction of young athletes this year so far – it’s always a pleasure to talk about the club, the variety of athletic activities we offer and to talk about the huge pleasure young and old alike get from running, jumping and throwing. As well as the every day successes of staying fit or beating a personal target, you’ll see from our club news we have athletes performing at national level too. We also have three athletes selected to run for GB: Jack Gray, Julia Paternain and Tom Keen – Best of luck to them for their respective competitions.

It’s been a really busy time of year for Track and Field. June kicked off the Southern Championships and an Eastern Young Athletics League. There’s also been a Southern Athletics League, an East Anglian League, the England Athletics 10,000m Championships and U20/U23 TnF championships. The final Sunday of the month was the Eastern championships here at Wilberforce Road. Phew, a busy month; some great performances and a lot of fun. You can see the up and coming events at a glance here.

We are a club of great variety and it was an enormous pleasure to read the excellent report on the C&C Fell Runners trip to the Lake District. Who knew that a club of flat-landers of Cambridgeshire had some Fell runners? !  Finally there is a summer run and social being organised: The Wimpole 10k and picnic on 24th July, run starting at 6:45pm. I hope many of you will be able to come along and enjoy the event.

Finally, please don’t forget, that even a small amount of your time can help the club run – so get involved. We had some success recruiting people to help with rotas on a Monday evenings however we starting a fresh search for some key posts: Supporters Club members, Track and Field Portfolio coordinator and Welfare Officers.

Whatever you are doing this summer, enjoy yourselves.
