World University Cross Country Championships

After an outstanding cross country season Alex Melloy was rewarded by being selected to represent Great Britain at the World University Cross Country Championship in Muscat, Oman. It was not your typical cross country conditions with no mud in site and a 30 degree heat to contend with. Twenty two countries took part.

Alex and his team  won the gold medal in the short course relay. The team consisted of two female runners and two male runners from Loughborough and Birmingham Universities with the last leg runner having a great run and moving the team from third to first.

The next day Alex competed in the individual short course event where he finished tenth helping the men’s team take bronze. The results from the long course were then added to those from the short course which resulted in another bronze medal for Alex and the team.

These results are remarkable considering the heat acclimatisation that is required to run in those temperature plus the fact that Alex had suffered a nasty cut at the BUCS XC championships in Leeds at the beginning of the month.
