View from the Chair – May 2022

Dear member,

Welcome to my personal favourite month of the year. Warmer weather, longer days, fresh growth everywhere. A great month to enjoy early morning or evening runs along your favourite trails or to train at the Wilberforce Road track.

The track and field season has finally begun with our first EYAL and EAL competitions, along with the first of the new Hockeys 5k series. The Events calendar on the website is filling up with opportunities to get involved and compete in the coming weeks and months.

At the most recent committee meeting we were reviewing the finances from the past year. We have been extremely fortunate – the number of members has recovered to almost pre-pandemic levels to just under 700. Unfortunately, its still taking the sport as a whole time to recover – we still do not have as many competitors or volunteers taking part as previously but there are signs this is starting to recover too.

Finally, this month you will receive a notice regarding our search for a Chair to take over from myself at the AGM in October – it’s right that we start the process this early. After six years, it’s time for someone new to step into this role – it will be good for the club to ensure we have new ideas and energy to lead us . I’m remaining at the club and will take on other projects to help us move forward.

In the meantime, enjoy your training and competing and make the most of May.

All the best,

Keith Clarke
