Record-Breakers Irwin and Williamson, and Wagstaff U17 English Champion

England Athletics U17/U15 Championships – 27 August 2023, Birmingham
Leah Wagstaff continued her amazing summer of success with victory in the U17 Hurdles at the English Championships. Although only in her first year as an U17, she eased through her heat to claim her place in the final.
In the final she controlled the race from the start to win comfortably in 11.37. This was just outside her fastest time of the year, 11.35, which remains the quickest time in Britain in 2023 for her age group.

Many congratulations to her, and her coach, Stuart Dunlop.

It’s a big achievement to even make it to this event, held at the famous Alexander Stadium, Birmingham and C&C had several other athletes competing.
Adam Johnson was 7th in the U15 3000m, Omondi Owuor 10th in the U15 High Jump, and Ewan Taylor 7th in the U17 1500m. Also there, but narrowly missing out on the finals, were Lexi Harrison (800m) and Paul Lambrecht (100m and 200m). It’s wonderful to see C&C youngsters competing at such a high level. The experience will be invaluable and it’s great for the club to know that there is such a wealth of talent coming through the ranks. Well done to you all.
Antrim Half Marathon
Hannah Irwin has been in great form recently and this continued at the Antrim Half Marathon. Running for Northern Ireland, Hannah completed the course in a P.B. of 1:11.04. This is not only a new club record, but also a new Northern Irish record as well!
In addition, the time is the 5th fastest run in Britain this year, and is inside the qualifying time for the World Half Marathon Championships that take place in Riga, Latvia, on 1st October 2023. It has yet to be confirmed, but by running the required standard, Hannah has given herself the chance of competing at these championships.
Ian Williamson goes to top of British rankings
Congratulations to Ian Williamson, who ran a 3:54.00 1500m at a Watford Open Graded meeting this week. The time is the fastest run in Britain this year by anyone in Ian’s M40 Age Group – and is a clear 2 seconds faster than the next quickest time.
All the more impressive when you consider that Ian moves up to the next age group in a matter of months. This result was also a fantastic confidence builder for Ian as he prepares for the European Masters Championships in Italy in September. Good luck Ian!
