View from the Chair – July 2020

Dear all,

Just three things:

1/ Despite the disappointments of T&F competition cancellations this year England Athletics are progressing with phase 2 of their recovery plan having announced competitions for the remaining part of the year. Things are looking up for August onwards.

2/ I have been in regular conversations with the university regarding the re-opening preparations for Wilberforce Road which have begun in earnest. As of 5th July, they were waiting for the relevant department to give them the all-clear to re-open. As you read this (which maybe later in the month), you may have already seen an announcement of re-opening club training sessions at the track – if not, please look out for an email or the website or Facebook for details of how to book into a training session (so that we can manage numbers to a safe limit). It will not be possible to “just turn up” at the track for a period of time.

3/ With growing confidence in Wilberforce Road opening early August, we have taken the decision to end the suspension of membership fees on 20th July – a 120-day pause. We have still paid the affiliation fees and other costs, such as insurance so we hope you will support the club in making this decision. The end date of your memberships will be extended by 120 days. The club reserves have covered the interim costs but it would be unwise to start paying the facility fees again without membership fee coverage.

Look out for news during July of a re-opening date – I am cautiously optimistic.

All the best,

Keith Clarke
