Coaches needed for wheelchair athletics

C&C has a thriving wheelchair athletics group which is expanding.  We’re also hoping to add the new paralympic event of racerunning to the group soon.  We need new coaches and helpers to enable us to continue.

The rewards are high for coaches.  Coaching keen athletes is great fun – as any coach will tell you – and wheelchair athletics is a really interesting event to coach.  It’s both technical, like complicated jumps and throws, but the basic training mode is simple, like endurance running, so coaches can have different levels of skill and learn as they go.  The athletes often show big improvements and a very high level of commitment which is very rewarding.

Demand from athletes is increasing.  Numbers are small but we need one to one support for new athletes and work in small groups even with experienced members.  Racerunning – running with the support of a tricycle-type of support – is an exciting new event and could take off.

If you’re interested in joining us please email [email protected].  No experience is required and we can offer training in all aspects of the sport.  If you have knowledge or experience of disability we would be particularly pleased to hear from you and you can be completely non-sporty yourself so long as you enjoy helping other people to join in physical activities!

We train on Monday evenings from 6.00 to 7.30 and are based at the Cambridge University Sports Centre on Phillippa Fawcett Drive CB3 0FS.  We also use the Cambridge University track, which is close to the sports centre.  It isn’t necessary to come along every week.  We cover for each other but we would hope that coaches could attend on most weeks.
