5 reasons to run a marathon in 2021

This month we have an article by a guest contributor: Elena from Mavens:

Seen by many as the gold standard in physical fitness achievement, there are so many benefits for anyone wanting to run a marathon. Whether you think you don’t have enough time to train, or you doubt you could complete such a monumental task, with the right approach you can do it! Here are five of the best reasons to run a marathon in 2021.

1. Get Fit

First and foremost, when you embark on a marathon training plan you are undoubtedly going to get fitter. No one’s saying that you should be aiming to run the London marathon – or your own version of the London marathon – in a sub four hour run, but sticking to whatever challenge you set will give your health a real boost in the process.

They key is to get a plan, take it as slowly as you need, and build up as you go. You’ll be amazed at how quickly your fitness improves. And how amazing you feel.

2. De-stress

Following on nicely from the physical, exercise is a great way to boost your mental health too. Life is full of decisions. Which bill needs paying first? Have I got time to fit that job in? Deodorant vs antiperspirant? Yep. Even the small decisions can add to your stress levels. But you can blow the stress away with exercise.

Once you’ve gotten into the habit of serious training, the stresses in your life really can seem a lot lighter. And sometimes you’ll make great decisions whilst you’re immersed in your run, including what may be the right fit for your training… deodorant vs antiperspirant?

We all need a break from reality from time to time (especially right now) and running affords you the opportunity to switch off from what’s going on around you and just focus on what’s directly ahead – the here and now.

3. Be inspired

There’s nothing quite like challenging yourself for inspiration. And a marathon, in many circles, is the ultimate challenge. Stepping out of your comfort zone is uncomfortable, of course, but it should give you the push to go beyond what you thought you were capable of. When you train for a marathon and eventually complete one you’ll not only be inspiring yourself, though – you’ll be inspiring the people around you, too.

4. Increase confidence

During your training you are going to feel fitter, stronger and less stressed. That’s the intention. But there will be tough moments too. The process of blasting through the difficult days (or simply getting past them) will give you a real confidence boost as you strive towards your ultimate goal. And the day you complete that goal, the sense of achievement will give you a lift that will stay with you for a lifetime.

5. Make memories

This is a simple one. You will never forget the experience of completing a marathon. And it’s pretty cool being able to tell people about it. And show them your medal! Remember, the saying ‘it’s a marathon, not a sprint’… it’s there for a reason. Take your time finding your feet, be organised and focussed, and you’ll always be able to look back at running your marathon with immense pride.

That should give you all the inspiration you need to run a marathon, now go for it. You won’t regret it!
